Earlier this week, India also surpassed Brazil in the number of coronavirus infections. There are currently around 90 thousand cases per day in the country. The coronavirus epidemic is putting a burden on India’s already crippled health system and at the moment there are also struggles to provide appropriate treatment to patients.
To strengthen the Indian healthcare sector, Singapore and Mumbai-based Zealth.ai aims to provide immediate medical support to emergency COVID-19 patients in domestic isolation.
Launched in February 2020 by Monica Mehta and Dheeraj Mundra, the startup’s digital health platform is powered by artificial intelligence that provides a one-stop solution for real-time remote monitoring of COVID-19 patients.
In fact, the platform also enables doctors to intervene in time in case of emergency.
Prior to beginning, Monica worked as a clinical research lead in Singapore and also as a senior scientist at Chugai Pharma under the Roche Group in Singapore. On the other hand, Dheeraj has six years of experience in creating many AI software for companies, including startups such as American Express to Tinyoule.
A PhD holder from the School of Medicine at National University of Singapore (NUS), Monika met Dheeraj, a double degree holder in Mathematics and Computer Science from IIT-Kharagpur, in an accelerator program in Singapore earlier this year.
Seeing their general interest on the Indian healthcare system, the two decided to launch Zealth.ai, which was going to solve the problems in the region. The HealthTech startup is graduated from an executive Deep Tech program conducted by Antler, a Singapore-based early-stage VC and tech startup accelerator.
Monica claims that Zealth.ai was founded with a vision to help monitor cancer patients. However, the model was adopted to help the country fight the deadly virus due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Monica Mehta, co-founder and CEO of Zealth.ai told BK,
“We started our journey with a passion to solve some basic health care problems in India. But when COVID-19 came, we also had to retreat, we made a lot of changes and adapted ourselves to win in the new normal. We had moments of doubt, but one thing we never stopped was talking to potential users to understand how the epidemic has affected them, and how we could create a solution that could potentially not only Could help them in the short term, but also in the coming decades. “
Patient monitoring solution
The startup’s core product CareShare is a remote monitoring platform that collects multiple data points from patients, including their health information, as well as fitness, as well as patient-reported symptoms. The data presented is analyzed using AI and machine learning algorithms, which calculate the risk score using the startup’s patent-pending algorithm.
CareShare, used to monitor COVID-19 patients in isolation at home and share information with their doctors, can be accessed by patients and doctors through a mobile app, and to hospitals via a dashboard.
The platform monitors the body temperature and oxygen saturation of a COVID-19 patient. It asks them to fill in details about other symptoms including a sore throat, cough, body ache, diarrhoea, odour and current health conditions. In fact, it also notes medicines consumed by the patient, such as paracetamol, etc.
Based on their diagnosis, users are required to update their health details once or twice a day on the platform.
Monica says,
“Patients receive a personalized response, including instructions to take care of mild symptoms for respiratory disease. If the patient is more at risk of becoming serious, then the data is transferred to the hospital immediately. ”
During the pilot study, the startup found that about 80 percent of high-risk patients received early intervention from doctors due to continuous monitoring, which saved them from becoming seriously ill.
Trade and others
The HealthTech startup works with hospitals on a B2B subscription model, where it charges on a per-patient basis. Currently, Zealth.ai is working with five hospitals, including PGI, Regency Healthcare, Gujarat Critical Care, Apoorva Hospital and Sanjeevan Hospital for COVID-19 monitoring. It is also under discussion with six more hospitals.
The co-founder declined to reveal membership details, but he says pricing depends on the customization required by the patient.
Monica claims that the startup is gaining interest from investors who largely focus on the health tech space. In fact, Zealth.ai is looking to increase its seed round after October this year after achieving its initial goals.
As part of its short-term plan, the HealthTech startup is focusing on helping COVID-19 patients in home isolation, as well as hospitals managing such patients. In addition, it is also exploring to partner with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Monica says
“With our long-term collaboration with an explosion number of COVID-19 cases our platform will provide a highly efficient way to manage patients and potentially save lives without the need for any additional manpower. Says Monica, “However, we believe in a collaborative approach. As startups, we all have the expertise that is unique to us. So instead of seeing other companies as competitive, we should try to create an ecosystem where we partner with each other and grow together. ”
